Since moving countries more than 7years ago, one of the words that come up so often for new people is: Network! We are told if you want to know people, you need to network. Find out about groups happening in the community and connect with them, e.g. join a walking group, join a cooking class, attend PTA(parent teacher association). I'm sure if you've ever moved places you heard these stories. The challenge there is: sometimes you join a group of people who are not there because they are looking for friends, they have their own networks and are not really looking into adding to them. That poses a problem for the new comer who gets told these are places for meeting new people and they remain lonely while in a group. I was there and got very disappointed: )
Now, three years ago I was introduced to another networking concept. This time it was to network for business. You join a group of fellow business people with the hope of learning from them and sharing ideas. The challenge I found there was: most of the people in the group would also be hoping to find new business with any person they meet, so they don't really share much and they are not really interested in getting friends, they want clients. If you sound like a potential client, then they are listening, otherwise no. That was another disappointment:)
Being the person I am, I don't easily give up, thank God for that trait. I knew there should be something that's for real out there. That is when I came across networking as a business. I was so intrigued with what I saw first time, I wanted to know more. I had people who were interested in me as a person, who were asking questions about my family, my background, where I came from and even what I wanted. I am sure you can tell, I was sold. This was so much such that, I was looking forward to always meeting with these networkers and sharing stories about our day, about how we could be better people in our families, our communities and even the whole world. I was taught to dream big, look beyond my present circumstances and decide what I really want in life. I have learnt so much even about health, skincare, business that I feel like I was at graduate school for more than three years.
So, as you are reading this, do you feel you have given up on your dreams, looking at the economy and settling for what you know you don't deserve in life? Have you done the networking thing and it left you out of pocket with all the monthly dinners which don't amount to anything much?
Why don't you flick me an email and we chat. I would like to know what you are doing to work towards your dreams maybe we can find we have the same interests. My email is zanechooselife@gmail.com
